Mathematics

AIMS:

MISSION
Visible teaching, visible learning and visible thinking.

VISION
Proficient problem solvers who develop joy in learning Mathematics.

Mathematics has traditionally been equated with numbers and shapes. But in this new educational landscape, and as the boundaries explored by mathematicians expand, Mathematics is no longer just about numbers and shapes found in the classrooms. It is about understanding the place of Mathematics in people’s lives.

To develop our students to be better problem solvers, the department adopted the 4-step Poyla Problem Solving strategies in the teaching of Mathematics in Northland Primary School.

The following are the steps for problem solving:
  1. understanding the problem
  2. devising a plan (choosing a heuristic)
  3. carrying out the plan
  4. reflecting

Home support is important and key to success. It is important to maintain an open communication with your child’s Mathematics teacher so that we can work in partnership on your child’s learning.

Mathematics can be found everywhere, in almost every facet of our lives. To help your child develop mathematical skills and concepts better, it is good to start Math exploration at home.

Look around for exciting Math teaching opportunity with your child – indoors, outdoors or on the go. Make Mathematics part of your daily lives and help your child understand that Math is fun.

Programmes

Teaching and Learning
In Northland, the math curriculum is supported and enriched by the following activities and facilities:

  • Learning Support Mathematics (LSM)
  • E2K Mathematics
  • EMPOWERING Mathematics
  • MATHESCORER

Sub-tabs for above 4 programmes under Programmes.

Working with Parents
Home support is important and key to success. It is important to maintain an open communication with your child’s Mathematics teacher so that we can work in partnership on your child’s learning. Parents are also invited to take part in our biennial Mathematics Workshops for Parents.
P1 Maths@Home Workshop

P4 & P5 Math

Learning Support Mathematics (LSM)

What is LSM?
It is to support and provide help early for pupils with weak basic numeracy skills.

What are the important features in LSM?
Selected students
  • receive more individual attention from teacher as class size is small
  • receive help in specific areas that they are weak in
  • learn in an conducive environment
  • experience many varied activities
  • learn through hands-on experiences
  • build confidence through encouragement and success experiences

Full Withdrawal (Primary 1 & 2)

Students
  • attend LSM class for Maths period
  • report to LSM teacher for Maths
  • Primary 1 students may also attend remediation classes after school (to be advised on a case by case)
  • Primary 2 will also attend remediation classes before school (Once/ Twice a week - to be advised)

Excellence 2000 (E2K) Mathematics

The E2K Mathematics Programme Singapore is a Mathematics enrichment programme aims to develop in students mathematical reasoning skills and deepen their conceptual understanding through an inquiry approach. The rich learning experiences offered by the programme serve to help students to develop the habits, attitudes and dispositions mathematicians possess, as well as to gain important 21st century competencies such as critical and inventive thinking and effective communication skills.

EMPOWERING Mathematics Programme

Empowering Mathematics Programme is conducted by the Mathematics Department to help selected P6 children to master the basic concepts for Mathematics. It is conducted on every Monday and Thursday (except for Public Holidays and school holidays) commencing from Term 3 week 1 till PSLE, from 7.30 a.m. to 7.45 a.m. at 6D and 6G classroom.

MATHESCORER Programme

Mathescorer Programme is conducted by the Mathematics Department to help your child realise his/her potential in the area of Mathematics. It is conducted on every Wednesday (except for Public Holidays and school holidays) commencing from Term 3 week 1 till PSLE, from 1.30 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. at 6G classroom.
